Together we create a living stream of data

Most of the surface of the earth consists of water. It is the source of all life and certainly in the Netherlands we have lived with the sea and rivers for centuries. We don't know any better and often we don't think about it anymore. We cross the bridge or tunnel and leave the river behind us. But do you ever stop to think how nice it is to have a river in your city?

WaterWalks is a project of Ludwig, a collective of artists, musicians, scientists and entrepreneurial minds working together to find new ways to make people think about the big issues of our time, like climate change. We think, like one of our inspirations, Floris van Alkemade, that the solutions to these big issues lie in collaborations between art and science.

A new water map

In climate change, water plays a major role. We want to draw attention to this by getting people to think about water in general and rivers, canals, moats, lakes etc. in particular. So much happens there! With the app we create together a new water map of films, audio, photos and stories along (in 2022) the Maas. We are organizing this in cooperation with 150 Years Nieuwe Waterweg and with the support of the City of Rotterdam.

We want to do the same along every water in the world! Artists, ecologists, school children, historians, scientists and anyone who loves water and walking we invite to be part of our project. Through the app, share your personal connection to water. From unique birds and plants to objects you find along the river and personal stories. Everyone is an expert on their own thoughts. In the app you will also discover what others contribute and find new, unexpected places.

The project started in 2019 and has already been implemented in several places, such as along the IJmeer and the Amstel. More information can be found in our archive.
